Obituary

June Ratner

June 1, 1923 - February 5, 2016

June Ratner was born June Richards on June 1, 1923 in the mining town of Iron River, Michigan, the daughter of the late Thomas and Lillian Richards. She graduated from high school at the age of 16 and began working as a waitress. In 1943, she met her future husband, Louis Ratner, who was in war time service. Lou and June moved to Sullivan County and began to raise a family. In 1953, 4 children later, Lou, a Police Sergeant in Liberty was elected Sheriff of Sullivan County. The family moved to Monticello, where June assumed the duties of matron and head cook at the jail. A fifth child was born in 1956.

Sadly, in 1958, Lou and June separated and eventually divorced. June returned to the family home in Ferndale where she raised their five children. When the children were old enough, she enrolled in Orange County Community College. June, at the age of 50, graduated with honors as a registered nurse.

June began her nursing career at Maimonides Hospital in Liberty, NY and advanced to becoming a charge nurse in the intensive care unit at what is now Catskill Regional Medical Center. When June retired from nursing, she re-engaged her love of gardening and her deep interest in the great philosophers.

June was a brilliant, independent woman with little patience for the trivial. At the age of 80, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and her prognosis after several months of radiation and chemo, was such that hospice was advised. June declined hospice and through shear will and good fate not only survived but thrived for 12 more years.

June's last days were spent being cared for lovingly by the wonderful staff at the SNU unit at Catskill Regional Medical Center. A special thanks to her surgeon and guardian angel, Dr. Abdul Shahzad. We will be forever grateful.

June is survived by sons, Milton (Beatrice) of Liberty, Robert (Denise) of Swan Lake and Daniel (Carlene) of Liberty; grandchildren, James, Joseph (Christie), Jason (Rochel), Robert McLoughlin (Debbie), Jennifer Hoyt (Robert), Tania Milza (Michael), Robert, Melissa, Lindsay Gandulla (Joel), Jaime Marhevsky (Capt. John), Daniel (Jennifer), Pamela Driscoll (Frank), William Hulse and Timothy Hulse (Amber); 22 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren and 3 sisters, Patricia, Marion and Clovis. Also left to miss June is her canine love, Fritz. She will have Gurty and Max, two past pets, to keep her company.

June was predeceased by a daughter, Karen; son, Michael and his wife Eileen; granddaughter, Diahann (Watson) and her husband Robert and several brothers and sisters.

Private services and burial will be held for the family on Monday February 15, 2016 in Liberty, NY.

Funeral arrangements are by Ramsay's Funeral Homes Inc. Liberty, NY.

Biography

Beatrice Meachum

Liberty, NY

On December 19, 2015, Beatrice Meachum was called home to be with her Lord. She passed away peacefully at Catskill Regional Medical Center with her loving family by her side. She was 94.

"There's magic in a Mother's touch,

And sunshine in her smile.

There's love in everything she does

To make our lives worthwhile.

We can find both hope and courage

Just by looking in her eyes.

Her laughter is a source of joy,

Her works are warm and wise.

There is a kindness and compassion

To be found in her embrace,

And we see the light of Heaven

Shining from a Mother's face."

Beatrice was born on June 26, 1921 in Brooklyn, NY to her late parents, Hans C. and Rose F. Beatrice Jensen. She moved to Liberty in 1946 with her husband and became an active member of the community. She was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Liberty; a member of Catholic Daughters Court Mary Anthony # 883; a charter member of St. Peter's Rosary Society; a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary - Clarence Hoyt VFW Post #9217, Liberty, NY; a 40-year member of Sullivan County Cooperative Extension Liberty Belles and for over 25 years was a member of the Foster Grandparent Program at Liberty High School.

Beatrice looked forward to passing on for she knew she would be with her Lord and could start her ultimate job of looking down on her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren who she loved so dearly. Her final wish would be: "Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow; I am the diamond glint on the snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain; I am the gentle autumn rain. When you waken in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of the quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft star that shines at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there. I did not die."

Beatrice is survived by her five children; Peter C. Meachum and his fiancé, RaeEllen Becker of Swan Lake, NY, Kathleen Meachum of Mechanicsburg, PA, Maureen Barber and her husband Clarence of Liberty, NY, Nancy Meachum of Ilion, NY and Linda Brewer of Bellwood, PA; 13 grandchildren, Todd, Terri, Sandi, Tracy, Samantha, Tonia, Jeremiah, Heather, Christopher, Jasmine, Matthew, Korin and Angela; 32 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. She is further survived by two nieces, Sonja and Maria; two great-nieces, Anne and Amy and one great-nephew, Shenzi. On Thursday, November 12, 2015, Ethel Mary Ippolito of Larchmont, New York passed away surrounded by her loving family after a five year battle with Parkinson's disease.

Born on May 9, 1933, the eldest daughter of Gladys Veronica Roosa and Anthony DeFilippi, she resided the majority of her life in Liberty, New York.

A graduate of St. Peter's Elementary and Liberty High School, Ethel decided after working in Stickel's Pharmacy during high school to attend St. John's University in Brooklyn, NY to study Pharmacology until marrying her lifelong love Steven Joseph Ippolito on June 26, 1954. Together they spent 43 years, raising their three children, which they considered their greatest accomplishments in life. Ethel prided herself in being a homemaker and mother. Later in life, she became involved in the Lady's Aid of Claryville, NY and enjoyed the time she spent with her friends quilting, recipe swapping and performing volunteer work.

After the children had grown and started their own lives, Ethel became a Certified Religious Education Teacher through the Diocese of NY; attending classes at Dunwoodie Seminary in Yonkers, NY while her husband Steven obtained his Deaconate. After completion of her courses, she returned to her Alma Mater, St. Peter's, to guide her students through the sacraments in the Roman Catholic Religion for the next 25 years; finally teaching a fifth grade in addition to Religious Education before her retirement in 2001. Upon retirement, Ethel moved to Guilderland, NY where she resided for 12 years to assist in raising her grandchildren, Nicholas and Andrew, who brought the greatest joy to her life during that time.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Steven and dear friends Marianne Reed, Lowell Heffley and Timothy Stoddard. She is survived by her sisters, Rosemary Osborn of Pine Bush, NY and Jeanette Kurtz of Baton Rouge, LA; her children, Mary Elizabeth (Michael Winston) of Ithaca, NY, Kathrin Ann of Buffalo, NY, Joseph Steven (Kirsten Steinfeldt) of Voorheesville, NY and devoted son-in-law, Peter Carchedi of Sauquoit, NY; her four grandchildren, Brian Aldrich Carchedi of New York City, Adam Edward Carchedi of Portland, OR, Nicholas Steven and Andrew Richard Ippolito both of Vorheesville, NY and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Sara Neuman Jewish Home; No Place Like Home of The Wartburg and Jansen Hospice and especially Ethel's Home Health Care Aide, Maureen Creary, for their continued and loving care during this difficult time.

The Ippolito family will receive friends on Sat. Nov. 21, 2015 from 10 AM to 11:15 AM at Ramsay's Funeral Home, 275 S. Main St. Liberty. Her funeral mass will be at 11:30 AM at St. Peter's Church in Liberty, NY. Burial will follow the mass in St. Peter's Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband.

Biography

Susan Helene Pierce

Lake Huntington, NY

April 21, 1952 ~ September 5, 2015

Susan Helene Kriegsman Rappaport Pierce passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Saturday September 5, 2015 at Westchester Medical Center. She was born on April 21, 1952 to Pearl Kriegsman and Jerome Eugene Tartakow in the Bronx, NY and was adopted and raised by Rose and Isadore James Rappaport. Her natural and adoptive parents have predeceased her as well as an infant daughter, Susan Rachel Pierce and her niece, Jacqueline Rappaport.

Susan leaves behind her husband of 38 years, Edward K. Pierce; her brother, Ronald (Marie) Rappaport; nephew, James Rappaport; her children, Danielle Geneva Pierce (Timothy), Carrie Rose Pierce (Tanlee), Amanda Sue Pierce ( Mel), Edward Morgan Pierce (Brandy) and James Isadore Pierce (Chillum) and her grandchildren, Akai Thompson, Noah, Evan, Nora and Eve Fitzpatrick, Shea, Jocelyn, Jenethier and Isaiah Richardson. She also leaves behind her beloved friends, Arthur Berger, Michael Kaplan, Frances Marlin, Judy Bernstein and Kitten and Kevin Warren.

Our mother, Susan's, whole life was about her five children. There was never a mountain she would not climb for them. Family took priority in her life even over her own. She was the President of the PTA in Narrowsburg Central School; president of the La La Chea League and a member of the 4-H group in Lava, NY. She single handedly saved the life of her second oldest child, Carrie Rose, who fell ill with brain cancer in 1989 and when her son Edward Morgan was born in 1983 with Cerebral Palsy and she was told he would have a slim chance of surviving, she fought for his life as well and made sure he survived. Susan was the most talented and creative woman who owned and operated her own bakery "Vintage Renaissance" for many years. People would come for miles to sample her old world style breads and pastries, the likes of which will be sorely missed across the state. To know Susan was a blessing in itself for she was such a kind-hearted, generous soul - she would give up her last slice of bread if she could help a person with it. Susan never sat down for a moment of her life. She was always working to improve her life and her children's lives as well. There wasn't time for all she took on in her life, but she took it on and never slowed down. She couldn't - it was not in her nature. This world will not be the same without her. The sun has just dimmed in the sky. She was the light. She was our mother.

Susan's Letters to Her Children

To My Favorite Child, Danielle: I love you the most. You introduced me to the joy of motherhood and made us a family. You were the sweetest, most beautiful baby in the world. I fell in love from the moment I saw you, although from that time on I never again slept through the night. My creative, sensitive idealist - strong and independent. Hesitant to let people get to know you, protective and genuinely unselfish of those you love. Oh, how I danced on the night you were born! And as you grew, you chose me for your dance partner. You have made me proud to be your mother. You are my absolute favorite.

To My Favorite Child, Carrie: I love you the most. You were born with the most exquisite fine skin, a button nose and long tapered fingers and toes. You are my red with a sprinkling of freckles and a mischievous laugh. I love your vivid imagination and flair for the dark side. Always color coordinated, always stylish. I treasure your letters and carefully chosen cards and gifts. You are compassionate and nurturing to all animals and humans alike. Above all, I admire your strength and skills at adapting to life's uncertainties. Oh, how I danced on the night you were born and held you so close in my arms! I sometimes think I need you more than you need me. You make me proud to be your mother. You are my absolute favorite.

To My Favorite Child, Amanda: I love you the most. At the moment of your birth you exploded into the world. You arrived with personality and whimsy, a pixyish changeling, a child secretly exchanged for another. From where did you come? A gift of life. All friends were your friends, all parents coveted you. You never stopped spinning, always talking, the center of attention, and the center of our lives. The middle child. You grew up to be godmother to all the lost children.

At precisely 4:00 AM on the night you were born, bells rang and we danced. Oh, how I held you so tightly in my arms, oh how I held you so close! You made me so proud to be your mother. You are my absolute favorite.

To My Favorite Child, Edward: I love you the most. My first son. A boy to carry on the name of his father. Your entry into the world was a tenuous one. You survived against all expectations. An old soul, as they say. A shadow child, hidden among the older sisters. Shy, quiet, introspective. More interested in the past than the present. The future an unknown. You rarely cried or showed any emotion. We barely knew you were there, truth be told. But you grew and grew and grew. Hello, Ed, glad to meet you. "If you're reading this ..Congratulations! You're alive! If that's not something to smile about, then I don't know what is." Yes, Ed, I do love you and when I was able to dance after you were excised from my womb, I danced with the angels who watched over you. I am proud to be your mother. You are my absolute favorite.

To My Favorite Child, James: I love you the most. My second son, my last baby, my eye apple. The last to nurse at my breast, the last to tug on my apron. You're an amazing human being. You have humbled me with your intelligence and character. You have chosen to follow an unknown path, to behave in a different way, to believe in your own thoughts. You were the most difficult child to raise. I could not bend you. I could not lead you. In loving you I had to let you go. I could not hold you. *Not all who wander are lost.* J.R.R. Tolkien - On the night you were born, I danced the last dance with you. I held you tight in my arms. Oh, how I loved you so! For experiencing a great loss, yet greeting the world with a handshake and a smile. I love you the most. You have made me proud to be your mother. You are my absolute favorite.

Visiting hours will be on Thursday September 10, 2015 from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 PM at Ramsay's Funeral Home, 3534 Route 55, Kauneonga Lake, NY. Funeral services will be held on Friday September 11 at the funeral home at 11 AM. Rabbi Marvin Goldman will officiate. Burial will follow the services at Laurel Cemetery, Cochecton Center, NY.

Kathleen Andrea Gordon

Monticello, NY

Kathleen Andrea Gordon began her life on December 21, 1949 in Arima of Trinidad and Tobago. She was the fourth child of twelve children to Feddy Cummings and Eutrice James. She went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday June 3, 2015 in the company of family and friends.

Kathleen was educated at Allen's Business School. As a business entrepreneur, she was well-known for her food catering and pastries and was an excellent seamstress. She gave her life to the Lord as a young woman and became a member at Bethel Pentecostal Church in Arima, Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Her fervent faithfulness to God caused her to be steadfast in her Christian beliefs. Even on her dying bed, she was a pray warrior.

Kathleen loved to travel as often as possible. She migrated to Canada and was a resident for three pleasurable years; she then relocated, and permanently made her home in the United States for fifteen years.

She was also a good hostess, who cooked and loved to party. With her contagious laughs and joyousness, she had a good time with her friends and family. She was very comical and exhibited a loving and charismatic persona; it was the most outstanding characteristic about her.

Her children were her greatest love: Sharleen Cummings and Pauline Haynes, her daughters and her son, Shirvan Cummings (deceased). Sharleen followed in her mother's footsteps and took over the great culinary skills and currently is a food caterer; Pauline successfully obtained a home with the help of her husband Irving Hayes, who is also Kathleen's favored son-in-law. Shirvan, a smooth talker, a loving son to his mother, successfully completed Arima Senior Comprehensive. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2004 at the age of 27.

In 1966, Kathleen met her loving husband, Victor Gordon, and got married on May 9, 1997. They were ceremoniously married at Bethel Pentecostal in Arima, Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and have since celebrated eighteen years of marital bliss. In July 2008, Kathleen's health began to decline. Victor facilitated in making sure the she received the best clinical care possible.

Together they had one child, Pauline Haynes. Kathleen was blessed to have enjoyed her grandchildren: Sharlon, Neisa, Kenisha, Kyle and Qudir and great-grandchildren, Tishon and Erika.

She left behind her husband, Victor; four brothers, Errol, Michael, Earl and Martinez; six sisters, Angela, Rachel, Lucy, Agnes, Eathel and Charmaine; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also left behind 27 nieces and nephews, a bunch of great-nieces and great-nephews; cousins of the Cummings,Bobb's and Desouze's family and her best friends, Ann Marie, Maureen, Grace, Fredrickah, Portia, Joan, and friends and family of many.

We surely cherished the moments we had with her.
